Argentina – go from Torres del Paine to El Calafate in Patagonia. Or from Santiago to Mendoza wine region. Or cross the lakes from Puerto Varas to Bariloche in the Lake District.
Bolivia – crossing from San Pedro de Atacama and over to the salt flats in Salar de Uyuni is a classic route. You can make it circular back to Chile or carry on to La Paz.
Antarctica and Falkland Islands – some Antarctica voyages depart from Punta Arenas including some fly-cruises. It is also the gateway to the Falkland Islands, often combined with South Georgia and Antarctica.
Chile has a large range of climates with desert in the north, Mediterranean conditions in the central region and damp and cool in the south. The best time to visit is spring (Sept-Nov) and autumn (March- April). Between June and September the heat in the northern part of the country is less intense. Rain can fall at any time of the year and the weather is changeable in the mountains.
If in doubt; be prepared for all weathers.
The local currency is the Chilean Peso. Travellers cheques can be difficult and expensive to change. ATMs are widely available and most large shops accept credit cards although there may be a charge.
You should visit your family doctor and check that you are up to date with your immunisations for typhoid, diphtheria, polio and hepatitis A. There are no compulsory vaccinations for Chile at the current time. Vaccination requirements are subject to change. Check with your family Doctor.

Make sure you have 6 months validity left on your passport before traveling to Chile. UK citizens do not currently require a visa to enter Chile as a tourist and are granted a 3 month stay upon arrival.

It takes around 16 hrs on average to reach Santiago from the UK. There are no direct flights from the UK, a change of plane is required in Europe, Brazil or the USA.

This really was the holiday of a lifetime and thanks to expedition leader Hannah and her fantastic team was it was a magical experience. The scenery and wildlife were breathtaking and the history of polar exportation, and my hero Sir Ernest Shackleton in particular was vividly, brought to life. To be able to follow his journey and pay my respects to him at his graveside in South Georgia was very emotional and something I will never forget.
