Transfer to the trailhead and begin hiking. Today’s trek is mainly at a gentle gradient alongside the rushing Urubamba river. Tonight we camp alongside the impressive ruins of Llactapata.
Begin the ascent towards the infamous Dead Woman’s pass passing through peaceful cloud forest with superb views across to the snow capped Wakay Wilka or Veronica Mountain. Camp at Llulluchapampa and enjoy stunning views into the valley below.
The most challenging day of the Inca Trail begins with a steady trek up to Dead Woman’s Pass or Warmiwanusca (4200 meters above sea level). Descending again you can enjoy a rest before carrying on to the Runcuracay pass that leads into dense cloud forest. In the afternoon, enjoy a gently undulating trail through a huge array of vegetation and wildlife before arriving at your campsite, Puyupatamarca.
From your vantage point high above the clouds, enjoy a spectactular sunrise over Salkantay mountain. Descend to the Inca site of Winay Wayna with opportunities to explore the site. We continue on around the mountain with stunning views of the Urubamba Valley to reach the Sun Gate and your first view of Machu Picchu. You will walk down through the site then take a bus to your hotel and enjoy a well earned shower!
