Name a New Airport?

(25/04/2012)If you visit The Galapagos or Ecuador after October 2012, it is likely you will fly into Quito´s new international airport. So far, the new airport is without a name.

Be part of the process, and place your vote for a new name for Quito airport! Here we explain how to choose from the four options to name Quito airport, and what each option means.

How to choose the name for Quito´s new airport:

1. Go to http://www.nombrenuevoaeropuerto.com/home.php

2. Select from one of the four names written in yellow.

3. Enter your email address (correo electronic) and click on VOTAR

4. You will get a confirmation email. In the email, click on the link (Aqui). That´s it – all done!

Mitad del Mundo

This option is quite self explanatory. It means The Middle of the World, and refers to Quito´s position (almost) on the equator. The name Ecuador also comes from country´s position on the equator.

Manuela Saenz

Manuela Saenz is a much-loved feminist figure in Ecuador. She is most famous for being the lover of Liberator Simon Bolivar, but is also a revolutionary hero in her own right. Manuelita fought alongside Bolivar in his struggle for Ecuador´s independence from Spain. She is known as a brave, independent woman who did not conform to the role of women at the time.

Eugenio Espejo

Espejo is also recognized for his role in Ecuador’s independence. This scientist and writer is credited with starting national journalism, the arts and science in Ecuador. He was important in founding Ecuador´s national identity and in building the independence movement in Quito.

Carlos Montufar

Montufar was a military man involved in the drawing up of the first constitution of Ecuador. He fought for independence alongside Bolivar and was a leader in the final battles against the Spanish in 1812.
