An early start today to visit the Inca ruins of Tarawasi en route to Mollepata where we take a coffee break. We carry onto Marcoccasa by vehicle before we begin our 4 hour trek to the Salkantay Lodge and Adventure Resort (SLAR). The name relates to the nearby majestic mountain of Salkantay; the second most sacred peak in Inca mythology (6270m above sea level).

Day 5. Soraypampa

Today is spent at leisure or doing gentle activities; you can choose depending on how you are feeling and how well you are already acclimatised. Activities include a half day hike to a glacial lake or horse riding.

Day 6. To Wayra Lodge and Huayraccmachay

This morning we begin our trek by slowly ascending through the Rio Blanco valley to a pass of 4600m. This is the highest point of the trek and is surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba range and the south face of Salkantay towers above us. From the pass we descend to the Wayra Lodge where we spend the night.

Day 7. Huayraccmachay to Colpa Lodge

After a leisurely breakfast we begin by hiking downhill through increasingly lush vegetation. We arrive at the lodge in time for a traditional lunch. The Colpa Lodge is located in an open promontory at the confluence of three rivers. The outdoor hot tub in this lodge has prominent views of lush green mountains and a small, far-away, local town.

Day 8. Collapapampa to Lucma Lodge

After an early breakfast we head down the Santa Teresa River Valley, through more populated rural areas with coffee plantations bananas, ‘granadillas’, and orchards. We stop along the river for a hot picnic lunch. After another hour of trekking a private vehicle arrives to take us to the beginning of the “Llactapata Inca Trail” (30-minute drive). From the head of the trail it is a short climb (30 min.) to the Lucma Lodge, set in an avocado orchard. We arrive in time to allow for exploration of the small village of Lucmabamba and possible meeting with members of the local community.

Day 9. Lucmabamba to Aguas Calientes

After an early start we begin our ascent towards the Llactapata pass from where we have a distant but quite special view of Machu Picchu from the south west, a view few tourists get a chance to glimpse. After exploring the ruins of Llacatapata, and lunch we head down to the Aobamba River, passing through lush bamboo forests, orchards and coffee plantations. It's then a 30 minute scenic train journey to the town of Aguas Calientes where we check in to our hotel for the night.
